"Chicken,Pickin and Politickin" Celebrating the Poultry industry in the Arkansas River Valley, Mt Nebo State Park has played host to the Mt Nebo Chicken Fry since 1948. Tyson's award-winning cooks and Chamber volunteers prepare chicken strips, smoked chicken and all the fixins. Folks are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and spend the day. Back in the day, the Chicken Fry was THE political event of the year. Politicians from all over the state came to enjoy the view, the chicken and win over the voters of Yell County. After being moved to Veterans Riverfront Park for a number of years, in 2017 the community proved that the Mt Nebo Chicken Fry belongs back atop Mt Nebo. with over 2700 attending and 908 chicken dinners served, the 70th Annual Mt Nebo Chicken Fry was a great success. We will also have a blessing for our teachers and school leaders. We are praying this will be a fruitful, safe and blessed school year for everyone!

Join Park Interpreter BT for an enlightening hike down and around the picturesque Cedar Creek (note: this trail does not lead to the waterfall). This moderately strenuous trail is 1 ¼-mile long and will take about 1 ½ hours to complete. Please wear sturdy shoes and bring along some water.

Explore the wonders of Lake Dardanelle and the Arkansas River aboard the state park tour boat (weather permitting). Enjoy abundant wildlife, amazing history, and astounding views of the river valley throughout this 1-hour cruise. There is no fee for the tour, but space is limited. You must register for the tour. Call (479) 967-5516 to register for a seat. We begin boarding 15 minutes before the tour, at the boat dock near the south boat ramp.

Want to relax in a kayak while watching the sunset colors dance on the open water? Join Park Interpreter BT for a sunset kayak tour on Lake Bailey. This is a special opportunity to go kayaking on the lake after boathouse hours. Everyone is required to wear a life vest on this tour. There is a first-come-first-serve limit for this tour, so please sign up ahead of time. For an information sheet and to sign up for the tour please visit or call the park visitor center at (501)727-5441. There is a brief kayak paddling instruction at the beginning of the tour.

Enjoy a quiet evening on Lake Dardanelle on this 1.5-hour guided paddle with a park interpreter. You will be able to explore the coves of the lake and watch the wildlife as we go. Interpreters will provide instruction and guidance, so no experience is necessary, but you should be comfortable around water. Kayaks, life jackets, and paddles are provided. Sign up at the visitor center or call (479) 967-5516 at least one day in advance. If you prefer a tandem kayak (2 people), please specify when you register. We will meet at the visitor center front desk.

Mount Nebo Chicken Fry Youth Hike

Mount Nebo State Park is partnering with TAKAHIK for a youth hike during the Chicken Fry! Uncover some of the history of Mount Nebo with a park interpreter on this approximate 3-mile hike on a large portion of the Rim Trail. Those under the age of 8 will need to be accompanied by an adult. Wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water.

While many of us don't view them as food, some insects are considered part of a healthy diet all over the world! Come to the Mather Lodge breezeway to meet Park Interpreter Sam and learn about some of the unique traits that define bugs, and try some for yourself! You don’t have to eat any to attend, but those who do will become official members of the “I Ate a Bug” club, and will receive a certificate!
